The Day the Devil Got a Vote in Perry County

Someone had a wicked sense of humor back on Election Day in 1897. William McKinley comfortably won his bid for President in Perry County. The election also included voting for state and local offices.

I was finally going through some news clippings I’d saved off some years ago and was having trouble finding my 2nd great-grandfather, Christian S. Albright, in the one below. But there he is in the fine print at the bottom with the rest of those getting only a “scattering” of attention.

But, look closer – I almost missed it myself. Yes, someone in Saville decided that Satan would be perfect for the State Treasurer job. I’m guessing that taxes were just as fun back then as now.

A surprise write-in

Unfortunately, my ancestor did not win his bid for office. C.S. Albright got only two votes in his home town for Jury Commissioner. But at least he garnered one more vote than the devil.[1]
